Imbolg

February 2nd, also known as Candlemass or Brigid’s Day.  The Goddess returns to us from the shadowy underworld Crone stage and is renewed in the form of the Maid.  The colour of this festival is white and my altar is dressed with a white cloth and white candles.  White flowers such as lilies and snowdrops decorate my altar and are offered as a gift to the Goddess.  The feast for this festival should include milky foods (Imbolg means simply yews milk) such as rice puddings and cheeses and other dairy foods.  This is a cleansing time and part of my ‘ritual  build up’ will include a spring clean and smudging the rooms of the house.   Remember that this is a festival dedicated to Brede, also known as Brede or Brigid and your ritual should be performed in her name.  At Imbolg I usually perform my own personal binding promise as taught to me many years ago by Cathlain Murray when I first started to practice Wicca.  I now include a lovely verse I found by Marie Bruce.

Imbolg Ritual

Raise circle and call quarters:

Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the East, spirits of spear and thought, lend forth your power and your strength.  Hail blessed spirits of air and sky, cloud and breeze.  Spirits of inspiration and Spring; spirit of the eagle and sylphs; of incense and of the dawn, we ask that you bless us with your presence for this rite of celebration.

Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the South, spirits of sword and will, lend forth your power and strength.  Hail blessed spirits of fire and art and passion.  Spirits of summer and the sun and noon, spirits of salamanders and lion and the magical Phoenix, we ask that you bless us with your presence for this rite of celebration.

Hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower of the West, spirits of cup and emotion, lend forth your power and strength.  Hail blessed spirits of water and fertility.  Spirits of Autumn and twilight hours, spirits of the sea and ocean creatures, of rain and divination.  Spirits of undines and snake, we ask that you bless us with your presence for this rite of celebration.

Hail to the guardians of the Watchtower of the North, spirits of disc and matter; lend forth your power and strength.  Hail blessed spirits of earth and healing, of rock and stone and crystals.  Spirits of Winter and midnight and gnomes; and of sphinx and bull.  Spirits of mountains and fields, we ask that you bless us with your presence for this rite of celebration.

I call upon the Triple Goddess of the circle of rebirth; who brings life to all things.  She who shines in the night sky and who’s light encircles the Earth with magic and mystery.  She who is the wisdom of the stars, the pulse of blood and the slow growth of trees.  May her presence guide me and her blessing be upon me for I am her creation; I walk the path of the ancients and follow the old ways.

Horned One, All Father, by the bone, the antler and claw, by the dark forest, by wildness, fierce joy and passion, by all that is untamed and free.  Be here as the leap of life, that I may serve life, by being at one with it.

Here at Imbolg, feast of flames;

Winter ends as sunlight gains.

Goddess Brede, I ask you here;

Bring the Sun God, strong and clear.

Goddess of so many names,

We welcome you as winter wanes.

Lay your blessings beside Brede’s bed;

It is the Old Ways we wish tread.

Power now to us reveal,

With the spinning of the wheel.

As above so as below,

So mote it be!

Contemplate the passing year; cleanse away the old by burning Yule greenery.  This is the beginning of the Spring clean!  The wheel has turned full circle and it’s time to look at what we have accomplished and learnt in the passing year.

Turning to the new year ahead, we look forward.  This is the time when the Maid meets the young Lord and their courtship begins.  It is a time of new beginnings and new ideas and dreams.  We honour the Goddess at this time and makes promises to her for the coming year.

Take three cords, white, red and black.

Holding the white one first, say:

I honour you, Lady of renewal and transformation.

I wish to serve you with all that I am and all that I wish to become.

I want to grow in your light, gaining inspiration and creativity.

I make you this promise that in the coming cycle I will

 Complete my magical wand

In honour of your name to further my journey

on the path of truth of truth and illumination.

Holding the red cord next, say:

I honour you Mother, bringer of growth and fruitfulness.

I wish to serve you with all that I am and all that I wish to become.

I want to grow in your love, gaining energy and power.

I make you this promise that in the coming cycle I will

Spend each full Moon in worship of the Goddess,

growing in love and faith

In honour of your name to further my journey

on the path of strength and growth.

Finally take the black cord in your hand and say:

I honour you Wise One, Mother of all, bringer of Death and rebirth

I wish to serve you with all that I am and all that I wish to become.

I want to grow in your teaching, gaining knowledge and wisdom.

I make you this promise that in the coming cycle

Increase my knowledge of the Craft and pass it on to others

In honour of your name to further my journey

on the path of wisdom and serenity.

Begin to braid the cords together.  Contemplate and visualise your promises and hopes for the future.  Let the cords strengthen your vision and your resolve to achieve your goals.  With each cord visualise the tasks that you have set yourself taking shape and see them coming to fruition.

When the band is done and you feel ready to make the commitment to your promises, bind it to your wrist.

If you have altar tools to dedicate, this is the time to do it as part of your ritual.  Magically cleanse them with the elements by first sprinkling with salt to represent Earth, then with water.  Pass them carefully through the flame of a candle and finally through the smoke of incense to represent the element of Air.  As you do this say:

“I cleanse and consecrate this _______ and dedicate it to the Goddess and the God.  May it be used in light and love.  Blessed be.”

Communion:

We thank you Lord and Lady for these gifts from nature; the milk for churning and fruits for wine.

Libation.

Blessed spirits of the … thank you for your power and presence, merry meet, merry part, merry meet again.

Thank you Lord and Lady for your presence and energy, we thank the Maid Brede for her inspiration hail and farewell.

The rite is ended; the circle remains open but not broken.

Blessed be!
